The W114 Mercedes chassis was marketed as the "New Generation" when released in 1968, but became known colloquially for its model year as the Strich Acht for /8 or stroke eight . The W114 chassis was only available with 6 cylinder engines, but to live up to its nickname, this one has been given a proper V8 transplant.

The Mercedes-Benz 250C was a 2-door coupe version of the early E-Class sized sedan (well before Mercedes used the designation E-Class). It was however, a nicely equipped car for the time and today will drive nicely and feel more like a modern car than most contemporary cars from Asia or America. The biggest complaint you may have is that the 2.8 liter M130 inline-6 only puts out 150 SAE gross horsepower and will feel pokey compared to modern 4-banger equipped economy cars.

The seller of this 250C fixed any power complaints by installing a 5.0 liter Ford 302 V8 into the spot normally reserved for an I-6. The V8 is equipped with all sorts of aftermarket parts, intake, exhaust, and a roller camshaft - probably making in the range of 300 horsepower (give or take). Mated to a C4 automatic transmission this car makes a good sleeper street/strip car and cruiser.

The interior is in good shape for such a low price hot-rod, and while the B&M shifter looks well installed, it does look slightly out of place in the '72 Mercedes. The build quality on one of these sleepers is essential to future value as a cobbled up amateur job is never desired, but the small sign on the side of this 250C identifies it as related to Clifton Mercedes Sales/Service, an independent Mercedes repair shop. If this car belongs to the owner or a Mercedes mechanic, it could very well be the ultimate bargain sleeper.

Wow. If this were near me, I'd go test drive it.

Years ago I inherited my uncle's 1973 280se Sedan with Tan painted roof over Brown paint that he'd bought from new and picked up in Europe to drive around for the summer with my Aunt and three cousins. By the time I got it it was well worn and had been sitting for a year or two. It had the inline six but it was the more rare twin cam unit. This car had serious power and wonderful sound to it that I can only describe as sounding like an off shore power boat. I sold the car after a year of ownership to concentrate on my Alfa Romeo's but I still wish I had kept it now knowing how rare the car's two tone paint, twin cam motor and console mounted shifter combo actually was. ahh regrets.

I presume those hideous headlights are a US requirement? Are you allowed to fit the ones the car was designed for?

Nice coupe. I would have kept the factory shifter if possible.

Funny that every old MB v8 conversion I see gets a 302. Must be an easy transplant. There was once a W123 in my area that had one, the car was also black with blackout trim and black mesh 80s style wheels, it was pretty cool looking in its own way. As a 250C isn't particularly rare or valuable, and one can assume the original engine was dead, no problem here.

I'd have kept the correct wheel and shifter though.

Yep those are the horrid DOT lights. If the car was a couple years newer, it would also have huge park bench bumpers. Euro lights can be retrofitted with no problem (other than cost).

Agreed with what fintail said - the Euro lights can swap in and while not technically US Dept Of Transportation legal, no one is going to give you a ticket for it...although I believe they could in most states. Here is a set in Denmark for $500 USD + whatever shipping will cost ya.

It seems that every pre-war Ford gets a Chevy engine and all Mercedes get Fords...not sure why.

I had a V8 250C a few years back. It was the worst-case scenario hack job frankenstein piece of shit, and I was an idiot for buying it, but it sure looked and ran nice for a bit.

Oh, and there's currently a 351-swapped '71 280S for sale in San Diego for $1200, although it doesn't run. It would be in my driveway now if I hadn't had the hell of a time I did with my POS 250C.

And yes, I know the wheels and chrome wheel arches suck. I didn't even have it long enough to get a chance to ditch 'em.

Furthermore, that's a W108/9 front end grafted on to a 250C. I think it looks a hell of a lot better than the OEM setup.
